The hook is the first line people hear or read. Its only job is to make the next five seconds feel worth it. Here is a method you can use on any video in five minutes.
Step 1 — Find the payoff first
Watch your video and write down the single most valuable or surprising moment in one sentence. That's what the hook points at. If you can't find one, the video needs a re-edit, not a better hook.
Step 2 — Open a gap, don't give the answer
Good hooks make people need the rest. "I stopped drinking coffee for 30 days" opens a gap. "Coffee is bad for your sleep" closes it. Promise the payoff; don't spend it.
Step 3 — Make it specific
Numbers, names and details beat vague claims. "This changed my life" is weak. "This 4-minute habit doubled my reading" is strong — and only if it's true.
Step 4 — Say it in the first second
Start talking (or show the on-screen text) immediately. No "hey guys", no logo, no slow zoom. Put the same words on screen so people watching muted get it too.
Step 5 — Write three, test three
Write three hooks with different angles — for example a question, a bold claim and a "mistake" angle. Post each version as an Instagram trial reel so it's shown to people who don't follow you. The version that holds strangers is your hook.
Hook angles that work
- Mistake: "You're stretching wrong if you do this."
- Stakes: "If you post reels, read this before tomorrow."
- Specific result: "How I got 40 clients from one video."
- Contrarian: "Posting every day is hurting your account."
- Question: "Why do some reels get 100 views and others 100,000?"

Check: does your hook help the numbers that matter?
Instagram's Adam Mosseri has said watch time, likes per reach and sends per reach are the top three ranking signals. A hook that tricks people into staying and then disappoints hurts the other two. Honest hooks win twice.
