What are Instagram trial reels?

Updated September 29, 2026 · TrialReel

A trial reel is a reel that Instagram shows only to people who don't follow you. Your followers don't see it in their feed, and it doesn't appear on your profile grid for them. It's a test: you find out whether a video works with strangers before you commit it to your audience.

How trial reels work

  1. You create a reel as usual and toggle Trial on before posting.
  2. Instagram distributes it to non-followers through Reels and Explore.
  3. After roughly 24 hours you get early insights — views, likes, shares, and how it compares to your recent reels.
  4. You decide: share it with everyone, leave it as a trial, or let Instagram auto-share it if it performs well.

Why Instagram built them

Creators were afraid to experiment. Post something new and it flops in front of the people who already like you; the algorithm notices, and your next few reels reach fewer people. Trial reels remove the downside. Instagram gets more experimentation, creators get more data, and nobody's followers are spammed.

What trial reels are good for

What they're not

Trial reels aren't a hack for reach. A trial reel that non-followers ignore is telling you something true. The value is in the signal, and in the fact that a bad test costs you nothing with your existing audience.

Turn a reel you already posted into a trial reel

Drop the reel into TrialReel, get a new version with a fresh hook, color and timing, and test it on non-followers. Nothing is uploaded — it renders on your phone. $10 per trial reel.

Common questions

Do my followers see trial reels?

No. Trial reels are shown to non-followers only, unless you later share the reel with everyone or it's auto-shared because it performed well.

How long does a trial reel run?

Instagram gives early results after about 24 hours. You can leave a reel in trial indefinitely, share it with everyone at any time, or let auto-sharing decide after 72 hours.

Can I turn a trial reel into a regular reel?

Yes. From the reel's insights you can share it with everyone, and it becomes a normal post with all its existing engagement.

Do trial reels count against posting too often?

No. They live outside your followers' feeds, so you can run several a day without flooding anyone.
