50 hooks for trial reels
Updated October 31, 2026 · Last checked October 31, 2026 · TrialReel
A trial reel is shown to people who don't know you, so the opening line does a lot of the work. Here are fifty to try. Say them as the first thing you speak, or put one in the first line of your caption. Last checked October 31, 2026. These are starting points, not proven formulas.
How to use these
- Pick three that fit the reel. Make three versions, one hook each. Post all three as trials.
- Compare them with each other, not with regular reels, using sends, likes and watch time.
- Keep a note of which hooks win for you. After a month you'll have your own top ten.

Hooks that don't travel
Anything that assumes the viewer knows you: "as I said last week", "for my regulars", inside jokes, your name. Those work on followers and fall flat with strangers.
Don't promise what the video doesn't deliver
A hook only helps if the video pays it off. Instagram's head has named watch time as a top ranking signal; a hook that makes people leave in disappointment hurts it. Want a template instead of a list? See free reel hook templates.

Common questions
Where should the hook go on the video?
The strongest place is the first words you speak. If you add on-screen text yourself, keep it inside the safe area so buttons don't cover it.
Should the hook be spoken or on screen?
Either works. Spoken is the safer default because it doesn't depend on layout; on-screen text must stay clear of the buttons.
How many hooks should I test per reel?
Three is a practical start: enough to see a difference, few enough to read the results.
