Free reel hook templates (and how to check your hook)

To be clear about what this page is: it is not an AI hook generator. It is five hook patterns you can fill in yourself in a minute, a way to check the result, and links to fifty examples. If you want the one-click kind, you will not find it here, and we would rather say so than fake it.

Why hooks matter more on a trial reel

Instagram's trial reels are shown to non-followers first. People who have never heard of you give you about one second. Adam Mosseri has named watch time as one of the most important ranking signals, and the hook is what decides whether anyone watches long enough to count. So the opening is the cheapest thing to test.

The five patterns

Each pattern has a blank. Fill it with something true about your video. Never promise something the video does not deliver.

PatternFill-in templateExample shape
1. The result first"[Result] in [time]. Here is how."Start on the finished outcome, then back up.
2. The mistake"Stop doing [common thing]. It is why [problem]."Names a habit your viewer has.
3. The specific number"[Number] things I wish I knew before [situation]."Only use a number you can deliver.
4. The open question"What happens if you [unusual action]?"Opens a gap the video closes.
5. The contrarian line"Everyone says [belief]. Here is why that is wrong for [group]."Only if you can back it up.

How to write one in five minutes

  1. Watch your video and write down its single best moment in one sentence.
  2. Pick the pattern that fits that moment.
  3. Fill the blank with words a stranger would understand. Remove names, jokes and context only your followers know.
  4. Say it out loud. If it takes more than about two seconds to say, cut it.
  5. Make two more with different patterns, so you have three to test.

Where to put the hook

The strongest place is the first words you speak. You can also put it in the first line of your caption. If you add on-screen text yourself, keep it inside the safe area so buttons do not cover it; see the safe zone guide. TrialReel does not add text to your video by default.

Check your real opening

A template gets you a line. It does not tell you whether the video starts fast enough. The free reel score measures how soon you start talking and what your opening line is, and it checks pacing and length too. It is a prediction from our rules and an AI watcher, not Instagram data.

More hooks to copy

Our 50 hooks for trial reels page has fifty openers sorted by type. The longer method is in how to write a hook.

Test three at once

One hook is one data point. Three versions of the same video, each with a different opening, tell you which line stops strangers. This only works if each version is a real edit and not the same file reposted. Instagram's help text, as quoted by Planoly, warns that reused content may get limited reach. TrialReel can make the versions: Today: new edits of your videos every day, ready to download. Auto-posting to Instagram is open to invited testers while Meta finishes reviewing our app.

What not to do

Worked example of the fill-in method

Say your video shows how you cut a weekly task from two hours to twenty minutes. The best moment is the finished result, so pattern 1 fits: "Two hours of work in twenty minutes. Here is how." That is nine words and about two seconds. Now make two more from the same video using other patterns: the mistake ("Stop doing this task by hand every week") and the open question ("What would you do with an extra hour and a half every week?"). Three hooks, one video, ready to test. Only use a time or a number if your video actually shows it.

How to tell which hook won

Post each version as a trial reel on a different day, wait about 24 hours, and compare the three using views, sends and watch time in Instagram's insights. One result is a hint, not a verdict. If the same style of hook wins two or three times, keep it.

Check your hook on a real video

The free score measures how fast your video starts and what your opening line is. About a minute.

Quick answers

Is this an AI hook generator?

No. It is five fill-in-the-blank hook patterns with a free check of your real opening. We do not offer a one-click generator.

How long should a hook be?

Short enough to say in about one to two seconds. If it takes longer, cut it.

How do I check if my hook works?

Score the video free to see how soon you start and what your opening line is, then test three versions as trial reels and compare.
